WINNER OF 2014 ETISALAT PRIZE FOR LITERATURE ANNOUNCED

Songeziwe Mahlangu is the winner of the 2014 Etisalat Prize for Literature for debut fiction for his novel, Penumbra. The three shortlisted authors for the prize were Mahlangu, Nadia Davids, for An Imperfect Blessing and Chinelo Okparanta, for Happiness Like Water. Neema Komba was announced as the winner of this year’s Etisalat Flash Fiction competition. Penumbra was shortlisted for the Sunday Times Fiction Prize last year. The Etisalat Prize for Literature is a pan-African prize for debut authors of published fiction works. The winner receives £15 000, an engraved Montblanc Meisterstück pen and a fellowship at the University of East Anglia, mentored by Prof. Giles Foden, author of The Last King of Scotland. Etisalat also purchases 1 000 copies of each shortlisted book, and the shortlisted authors are rewarded with a book tour. The inaugural Etisalat Prize for Literature was won by Zimbabwean NoViolet Bulawayo, for her novel We Need New Names.

MUNICH PAYS TRIBUTE TO MAMA AFRICA!

“THE AFRICAN RENAISSANCE”

The Munich Volkshochschule is focussing its winter programme (07.10.2013-26.02.2014) on Subsaharan Africa. The programme, entitled “AFRICAN AWAKENING”,  will be dedicated to making the public aware of Africa´s invaluable cultural treasures and the social possibilities and economic opportunities inherent in African societies today.

In addition to the large variety of speeches and podium discussions led by experts, there will be a plethora of african film screenings and readings from african literature. Internationally renowned contemporary african art fairs, which exhibit the impressive diversity and dynamism of the african art scene such as the Joburg art fair in Johannesburg, South Africa and the Dak´art Fair in Dakar, Senegal will also be presented to the public in cooperation with the Munich Ethnological Museum.

There will even be language courses on offer. Don´t miss the opportunity to brush up on your Swahili or expand your personal repertoire of african dishes in the numerous cookery classes in the programme.
